Old text:

Appendix A specifies reserved and prohibited domain names under the domains that Norid manages. Prohibited names are names that may not be registered for various reasons.

Guidelines for amendments to Appendix A

New text:

Appendix A specifies reserved and prohibited domain names under the domain names that Norid manages. Reserved names are domain names that are in public use (for example, they form part of the geographical second-level domains) or names that are reserved for later use in this way. Prohibited names are names that may not be registered for various reasons.

If Norid decides that new domain names should be reserved or prohibited from registration, it will not be done retroactively. This means that if a domain name is already registered, the subscriber will retain their right to use the domain name even after the reservation comes into effect. However, if the domain name is later deleted, it will be blocked from new registration. Such domain names also cannot be transferred to a new subscriber.

Names that are reserved as geographical designations

These are names that are in use or reserved for further extension of the geographical second-level domains. For a name to be reserved in this category, it must have geographical significance, that is, it must be a settlement with a population of more than 5000 (according to Statistics Norway's figures), a municipality, a county, a region, an island of significant size, or one of the official names of Norway (selection in accordance with the list drawn up by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

Names that are reserved as geographical designations

These are names that are part of the geographical second-level domains (see Appendix B for an overview) or reserved for the expansion of the geographical second-level domains. For a domain name to be reserved under this category, it must have a certain level of geographical significance, such as a locality with more than 5,000 residents, a municipality, a county, a region, or a significantly sized island.

Official names of Norway (selected according to the list of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) are also reserved, even if they are not planned for inclusion in the geographical second-level domains. These domain names are allowed to be registered by the entity representing the area, which is the Norwegian government or someone appointed by it.
